Founded by American designer Ralph Lauren in the late 1960s, the company boomed in the 1980s as Lauren's designs came to be associated with a sophisticated and distinctly American attitude. Ralph Lauren partnered with L'Oreal to introduce fragrances, beginning with the iconic men's cologne "Polo" and the classic women's perfume "Lauren" in 1978.
The next two scents in the line, "Chaps For Men" and "Tuxedo For Women", both introduced in 1979, also became beloved classics. The success paved the way for other scents such as "Safari" and "Polo Sport". Safari was said to be inspired by Lauren's African Safaris, and it won the Fifi Award as Most Successful Women's Fragrance. The company continues to produce popular fragrances for men and women, and has now released over 60 scents.
